Natural Dental Care Options
Homemade Toothpaste – Aside from your toothbrush, the first product required for good home dental hygiene is toothpaste. For a normal family of four or five, a tube of toothpaste (roughly 5 oz.) will last about four weeks. With an average cost of $5 per tube, you are looking at a yearly cost of $60 to brush your teeth. You can cut that in half by using this simple homemade toothpaste recipe to supplement your store-bought paste – all at a cost of $6 for the raw ingredients. You can make multiple batches of toothpaste with these ingredients, so you will only need to buy more every three to four months.
Baking Soda – ⅔ cup
Fine Sea Salt – 1 tsp.
Peppermint Extract – 1 tsp. (for taste, add as much as you want)
Water – add to desired consistency
In a mason jar, add the baking soda, sea salt, and peppermint. Then, add the water slowly and begin mixing. Once you have reached a paste-like consistency, you are ready to start brushing. Each batch will cost you between $0.60 and $1.50, depending on the amount of flavoring you add.
Homemade Mouthwash – Another important part of your home dental hygiene routine is mouthwash. Mouthwash is great for maintaining healthy gums and fresh breath, but it can get expensive over the course of the year. If you have children you now have to have two kinds of mouth rinses to buy (kids mouthwash needs to be alcohol-free). At an average cost of $3.50 for the store brands ($7 total when purchasing a child-safe mouthwash as well), you will end up spending between $42 and $84 a year on mouthwash. With this easy recipe, you can cut that in half.
Filtered Water – ½ cup
Baking Soda – 2 tsp.
Tea Tree Oil – 2 drops
Peppermint Oil – 2 drops
Start with a sealable container or mason jar. Mix in the ingredients, and you are ready to start using it. Be sure to mix it up before uses, as the baking soda will settle. The oils will continue to mix over the course of time and may change the taste. This does not mean it is bad; it justs tastes different.
Natural Dental Whitening – At Plymouth Dentistry, we have a dental whitening option that allows you to keep your teeth white all year round. Our Whitening for Life program gives you at-home whitening gel and custom trays to use in between your dental cleaning appointments. While this option will keep your smile bright all year long, you can supplement it with this fast and easy home teeth whitening paste.
Strawberries – 1 or 2 berries
Baking Soda – add to achieve desired consistency
Get a small container. Mash the berries into a pulp and then mix in the baking soda until you create a paste. Spread the mixture on your teeth and let it sit for about five minutes. After that, rinse your teeth and brush them. The strawberry seeds are very small and could remain stuck in your teeth without a thorough brushing.
While separately these dollar amounts are not significant, when you spread that savings over the course of the year, you will see a nice increase in your bank account. There is no better feeling than knowing you have the money you need to take care of yourself and your family.
