One of the big trends these days is reducing your carbon footprint on the planet, or “going green.” People are buying cars that are half the size of normal cars, building and living in houses that are the size of an average living room, and doing all they can to replace processed foods and supplies with all-natural options. This is great, but one thing some people fail to do in this quest to save the planet is give you real-world, applicable alternatives.

Here are some real alternatives and supplements to dental hygiene products you use each day. Please note that these are homemade recipes and should not be substituted for any prescribed treatments or recommendations from Dr. Feucht. Ask him before you switch or supplement anything to make sure you are not going to do more harm than good.

All-Natural Dental Care

Here are some all-natural remedies that can help you get and keep a bright smile. These should be used in conjunction with the advice of Dr. Feucht.

1. Homemade Toothpaste – We all use toothpaste on a daily basis. Some natural ingredients have been known for decades to assist in good oral hygiene, such as baking soda (you may have seen this ingredient in your regular fluoride toothpaste). Here is a homemade option that can clean your teeth, freshen your breath, and keep your teeth healthy. Oh, did we mention that it also is all-natural and costs less than $1.50 to make five ounces?

Start with a small mason jar. Add ⅔ cup baking soda, 1 tsp. sea salt, and 2 tsp. natural flavoring (peppermint, spearmint, or any other mint essential oil you prefer). Next, add a little water at a time until you reach a thick consistency, similar to that of store-bought toothpaste. Make sure you stir it well, and keep it out of the sun. It doesn’t spoil, but the essential oils will begin to break down in the heat. When you go to brush, just scoop some onto the bristles and brush like you do your regular toothpaste. Your mouth will feel clean and refreshed each time.

2. Homemade Mouthwash – Finding a natural alternative to the alcohol-filled options on the shelf may have lead you to other store-bought brands. These brands, and the oddly sweet taste of some of them, may have led you back to the idea that the only way to have a clean mouth is through “burning” the bacteria out with alcohol. That does not have to be the case. Here is a solution that can help you keep your mouth clean and your breath fresh, is not too sweet, and will cost only a fraction of what the store-bought brands cost.

Add ½ cup distilled water to a small mason jar. Next, add 2 tsp. baking soda and 2 drops of both tea tree oil and peppermint essential oil. These are what will give it the taste that you are looking for, and the oils also have some wonderful antibacterial properties to help keep your mouth healthy. Shake up the mason jar (lid on), and you are ready to use your new mouthwash. Simply swish it in your mouth for a minute or so like you would regular mouthwash, and then rinse. After you find out how long it takes you to go through this amount, feel free to adjust the recipe to make a larger batch, but try to keep it at about a two-week supply. The oils will continue to blend over time, and the taste may change past that time frame.

3. Nature’s Dental Whitening – Professional dental whitening will always be the fastest and most effective way of getting whiter teeth, and Dr. Feucht offers a Whitening for Life program that can help keep your teeth white in between visits as well. A good way of supplementing the professional whitening from Plymouth Dentistry is a natural dental whitening regimen.

Strawberries are great for whiter teeth. They contain malic acid, a natural enamel whitener. Take a few strawberries and mash them into a pulp. Then add enough baking soda to make a paste. Take that paste and spread it across your teeth, leaving it on for about six minutes. If you do this consistently, you will see whitening results.
