Are you suffering from painful migraines and headaches? Many people don’t realize that dental issues may be the source of their migraines and headaches or can contribute to them. At Plymouth Dentistry, we can help you diagnose these problems and treat them, so that you can wake up and go through your day with less pain and discomfort.

How Do Dental Issues Contribute to Migraines?

For many people, headaches are affected or caused by TMJ disorder. TMJ disorder is a result of misalignment or other issues with your temporomandibular joint, which is the joint under your ear that connects your jaw to your head. When this joint is not aligned properly, it can cause pain and put pressure on your skull, which can lead to worsening headaches. Some of the symptoms of TMJ disorder include:

  • Soreness or pain in your jaw and face, especially when you wake up
  • Debilitating migraines and headaches
  • Pain when opening and closing your mouth
  • Clicking sound when opening your mouth
  • Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism

We Can Help Reduce Your Pain and Discomfort

If you are suffering from serious headaches, we can examine your mouth and jaw and review your medical history, as well as take X-rays, in order to determine if you have TMJ disorder. If you do have TMJ disorder, there are a number of ways that we can help. One of our most effective solutions is providing our patients with oral appliances and dental splints (NTI and CI night splints). These dental devices will correct the alignment of your jaw while you sleep and help to alleviate any pain or headaches you feel when you wake up. They will also prevent teeth grinding while you’re sleeping, and our patients have found them to be extremely effective in reducing their headaches.

In some cases, your jaw may be misaligned because your teeth, fillings, and dental crowns do not allow you to properly close your mouth. If this is the case, we can make adjustments to your fillings and crowns so that you can comfortably close your mouth. If your headaches continue to be a problem, we will keep working with you to find the right solution and can even refer you to a specialist who can provide additional dental treatments.
